The Economic Optimism Index in July remained unchanged at 37.4, despite recent grim economic news. However, that was still tied for the record low for the index. Of the consumer gauge's three subindexes, two fell: the Six-Month Economic Outlook, down 2.3% to 29.4, and Confidence in Federal Economic Policies, off 5.5% to 32.7. However, a glimmer of hope came from the Personal Financial Outlook, which rose 5.9% to 50.1 — a sign that Americans' finances may be in better shape than news headlines suggest.
